The Value in Not Speaking

Writer: Carlton BonillaCarlton Bonilla

"Most of the successful people I've known are the ones who do more listening than talking." --Bernard Baruch

"The art of conversation lies in listening." --Malcom Forbes

“Change happens by listening…” -- Jane Goodall

“You have two ears and one mouth, use them in proportion.” – My dad

Have you sat in meetings where one person in particular has the uncanny and unpleasant ability to talk and talk and talk. They’ve perfected circular breathing and miraculously can somehow talk nonstop for the entire hour?

Each day on LinkedIn, I read posts on the top ten skills a seller needs, how to win deals in five slides, three things all successful people have in common… but what I rarely see is mention of one of the greatest skills anybody, much less a seller can have, Listening.

Dan Lyons in his Time article says it well, “Buying a new car or house? Hoping to move up the ladder at work? Trying to win friends and influence people? Learn how to shut the F up.”

Listen. Be comfortable with that pause, with silence, there’s so much you can learn in that space.
